Music In Transit

It so happens that I end up playing the songs written by Gulzar usually when riding in cars or when I am in motion, in an airplane. I suppose this is because I subconsciously link motion to nostalgia. Anyway, tomorrow I am flying out to India from New York on a two week long break. And in a few minutes I am flying to New York from San Francisco. So it is only appropriate that I am playing this lovely Gulzar's song, "Barfaan", from the movie " The Blue Umbrella" as I wait to get on-board the flight.

Morning Music

After a day of staying drunk in enforced dark, sunlight across the twisted sheets on the bed, and this body run aground (no longer a seismograph of pain, calm and still), and voices singing dhrupad[1] (Raga Miyan Ki Todi) occupy this hour.

[1] Mani Kaul's documentary (this version doesn't have English sub-titles but since most of it is song, nothing significant will be lost) on the dhrupad tradition is worth watching.

Early Morning Music (On Repeat)

Segovia playing Bach's "Chaconne"; written apparently soon after Bach's wife died, this maze of repeating notes that ebb and flow is where the endlessly restless mind will rest today.
