In Passing ~ Saul Bellow
C,
When I opened up the news section of Google today, I noticed that Bellow had passed away. As someone who exalted Blake-ian energy, and who celebrated life of the mind and Quality in a culture caught (very literally) in a death spiral, with his essays, novels and advocacy, his presence will be missed.
"I am an American, Chicago born - Chicago, that sombre city - and go at things as I have taught myself, free-style, and will make record in my own way: first to knock, first admitted; sometimes an innocent knock, sometimes a not so innocent." as Augie March opens, should be enough inspiration for us, wannabe quill-drivers, to make record in our own way.
Best. ~S
PS: This also reminds me that in college, I never did finish reading to the end, Augie March. Perhaps it's time now to do so.
Excellent pieces on Bellow here:

A modern master
Bellow in his own words
